a Pirate's life for me...

OK, here is a picture of the much anticipated (by Tyler) birthday cake!!!

As soon as I saw it online, I knew no other cake would do for a 5 yr. old boy's pirate birthday party. When I started thinking about Tyler's special day, it happened to come at a very inconvenient time this year, being right before we are supposed to move. That being said, it made it all the more important to have a party.

I am not a cake froster! I would say it's probably one of my least talented areas... you'd think with 3 kids it would make for plenty of practice. I actually figured it out, by now I've made 20+ birthday cakes. But, this cake was actually relatively easy and VERY fun to make. I have learned over the years a few tricks of the trade from my mother-in-law, who makes fabulously delicious and beautiful wedding cakes. I am fortunate to have Jeff's mom have such an expertise in cakes, but also very lucky to have a mom who can make the best apple pies you have ever dreamt of. This comes in handy because my husband is a pie lover! We have the best of both worlds!

PS. The expression on Tyler's face when he saw this cake was one that I will NEVER forget! He was soooooooooooo happy! It's those moments that make it all worthwhile. :)

more to come on the party later... (especially on Jeff dressed up like a pirate)

Your cake is amazing, of course! Well done! How can Tyler already be 5? Time is passing too quickly.

what a cool cake! I am jealous about the pirate theme... I love all things pirates! We hope Tyler had a great b-day party. Also thanks for the good wished on my huge project. I really should be working on it instead of looking at blogs... oh well.

WAYYY cute cake, Janelle! You always were clever in the kitchen... (creating cake recipes from whatever we had in the college pantry, etc.). Way to go, Mom!
